Institutional Mental Health Policy
1. Introduction
Our institution recognizes mental health as an essential component of students’ overall well-being and academic success. In alignment with the National Mental Health Policy (2014), this policy aims to create a supportive, inclusive, and stigma-free environment where every student has access to mental health care and psychological support.
2. Objectives
The objectives of this policy are:
· Promote awareness about mental health and reduce stigma on campus.
· Provide accessible and confidential counseling and psychological support to students.
· Train faculties and staff to recognize signs of distress and guide students to appropriate help.
· Encourage peer support networks and student engagement in mental health promotion.
· Ensure that students in crisis receive immediate and professional intervention.
3. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All enrolled students of the institution.
- Faculty and administrative staff (in roles supporting students’ well-being).
- Counseling centers, student clubs, and peer-support groups associated with the institution.
4. Key Policy Provisions
4.1 Awareness and Sensitization
- Conduct regular workshops, seminars, and campaigns on stress management, suicide prevention, and resilience.
- Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Day and organize well-being activities throughout the academic year.
4.2 Counseling and Support Services
- Establish a Counseling Cell with trained mental health professionals.
- Provide free, confidential, and easily accessible counseling services to students.
- Offer both in-person and online counseling options.
4.3 Faculty and Staff Training
- Organize training for teachers to identify early signs of anxiety, depression, or distress among students.
- Develop a referral system to connect students with professional help.
4.4 Peer Support and Student Participation
- Create peer-support groups to encourage students to talk and share experiences.
- Promote student-led initiatives for mental well-being (yoga, meditation, clubs, awareness drives).
4.5 Crisis Intervention
- Develop a clear protocol for handling students at risk of self-harm or suicide.
- Provide 24/7 emergency helpline numbers and connect with local mental health services.
5. Implementation Mechanism
A Mental Health Committee will oversee policy implementation, consisting of counselors, faculty, and student representatives. Annual reports will review the effectiveness of activities and recommend improvements. Feedback from students will be regularly collected through surveys.
6. Confidentiality and Ethics
All counseling and support services will maintain strict confidentiality. Students’ personal information will not be shared without consent, except in cases of imminent risk to life.
7. Review of Policy
This policy will be reviewed every two years to ensure it remains relevant and effective, in consultation with mental health professionals and student representatives.
